I feel a little bit late to the Ursula K. Le Guin party - I just discovered Earthsea over the winter (just weeks after her death) and since then have been slowly working through her essays and non-fiction work. I’ve returned to her 1974 essay, “Why Are Americans Afraid of Dragons?” multiple times in recent weeks. I cannot champion enough this snippet on imagination, truth and fantasy. She was brilliant, creative, and consistently ahead of her time. “I believe that all the best faculties of a mature human being exist in the child, and that if these faculties are encouraged in youth they will act well and wisely in the adult, but if they are repressed and denied in the child they will stunt and cripple the adult personality. “And finally, I believe that one of the most deeply human, and humane, of these faculties is the power of imagination: so that it is our pleasant duty...to encourage it to grow freely, to flourish like the green bay tree, by giving it the best, absolutely the best and purest, nourishment it can absorb. ‬And never, under any circumstances, to squelch it, or sneer at it, or imply it is childish, or unmanly, or untrue. “Fantasy is true, of course. It isn’t factual but it’s true. Children know that. Adults know it too and that is precisely why so many are afraid of fantasy. They know its truth challenges, even threatens, all that is false, all that is phony, unnecessary and trivial in the life they have let themselves be forced into living. Our daughter is here! LAINEY MAE COOPER was born this morning at 11:04AM. She’s a perfectly chunky 8 lbs 15 oz, 21 inches. @karliecoop was and is so amazing. JPC is excited to be a big helper brother. I love my family!!
